Who We Are: The Beginnings of NARA

Welcome to the Northwest Area Residents Association (NARA), a community organization deeply rooted in the preservation of our neighborhood's unique rural charm and identity. Our story began in the quiet, rural areas of Las Vegas in the 1980s, where the sounds of roosters crowing and the sight of road runners darting across backyards were part of everyday life.

Our journey started in November 1994 with a determined and spirited neighbor named Linda Young. It was a typical evening when she knocked on the door with a message that would spark the formation of NARA. Linda, known for her moxie, was alarmed by a zoning request that threatened to replace our tranquil neighborhood with high-density apartments and commercial businesses. With her persuasive words and undeniable resolve, she rallied the neighbors and laid the groundwork for our community's resistance.

Linda's home, with a garage converted into a meeting room, became the hub of our early efforts. Neighbors from all around gathered to discuss the proposed development and our collective opposition. Linda's proactive approach included drafting letters of opposition and organizing meetings at local schools to ensure everyone was informed and engaged.

The name "Northwest Area Residents Association (NARA)" was born from Linda's vision, inspired by other local associations. With the motto "Sticks In A Bundle Are Unbreakable," we embraced our new identity, ready to protect our neighborhood's character and values.

Our first major victory came after several intense Planning Commission meetings. With the invaluable support of Councilman Matt Callister, who guided us through the complexities of city ordinances and developer strategies, we successfully blocked the rezoning request. This victory not only preserved our neighborhood but also galvanized our community, proving that organized, informed residents could make a significant impact.

On March 14, 1995, NARA was formally established. John Stanton, Mike Hamilton, Carol Moore, Sharon Johnson, Linda Young, and Lex Anderson took on key roles, each bringing their skills and dedication to the table. From organizing community events to setting up our infrastructure, we quickly built a strong foundation.

By April 27, 1995, NARA was fully operational, with a constitution, by-laws, and plans for our first community block party. Linda Young's continued efforts and the support of committed neighbors ensured our early success.

Today, NARA remains dedicated to preserving the rural atmosphere and community spirit that define our neighborhood. We believe that by staying organized, informed, and united, we can continue to protect our way of life and ensure that any new development aligns with our values and vision.

We invite you to join us in this ongoing effort. Together, we can keep our community strong, vibrant, and true to its roots.

Our story dates back to the 1980s when many of us moved here, drawn by the peaceful, rural atmosphere. Families settled on spacious lots, often sharing their space with chickens, horses, and even the occasional peacock. The sounds of roosters crowing in the morning and the sight of small private airplanes gliding overhead became...
